Challenges of a Replacement Elementary School

Kenneth Hutchens, Principal, VLK Architects, Inc.
Jeff Windsor, Director of Planning & Energy, Spring ISD
Bruce Casares, Vice President of Operations, Dyad Construction, LP
Neil Copelin, Project Manager, Dyad Construction, LP

It's one thing to throw down a prototype school on the open prairie, it's another to design and construct a new elementary school on an existing occupied school site in an established urban neighborhood. In this presentation attendees gained insight as to the site and building planning, security, phasing and construction considerations, regulatory issues and educational opportunities of designing a new elementary school constructed onsite with an existing operational school that it is to replace.

The new Bammel Elementary School for Spring Independent School District was built in a 14 month timeframe on the exiting 9-acre site and designed to allow for continuous uninterrupted occupancy of the existing school during construction while incorporating an existing building into the new campus, the Districts' educational curriculum, energy efficient systems and natural daylighting.
